Nishi Jain branded cover: NSE and BSE holidays in November 2026 and Muhurat trading timings

November 2026 has two weekday trading holidays on Indian stock exchanges and one special Sunday session for Diwali. Every date and time below comes from NSE and BSE circulars, with the circular number and date given so you can check the original yourself.

November 2026 market holidays at a glance

NSE notified its 2026 holidays in circular NSE/CMTR/71775 dated 12 Dec 2025 (NSE circular). BSE notified the same dates for its equity and equity derivatives segments in notice 20251212-8 of the same date (BSE notice).

November 2026 has 21 weekdays. Take away the two holidays and there are 19 regular trading sessions, plus the Sunday Muhurat session. BSE's notice adds that an exchange may change a holiday by issuing a separate circular in advance, so check the exchange website close to the date.

Muhurat trading 2026: date and timings

Muhurat trading is a short special session held on Diwali Laxmi Pujan day. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, 8 Nov. NSE gave the timings in circulars dated 19 Oct 2026 (NSE/CMTR/76941, NSE/FAOP/76940, NSE/COM/76978).

NSE segment

Normal trading (IST)

Equity (cash)

2:20 pm to 3:30 pm

Futures and options

2:20 pm to 3:40 pm

Commodity derivatives

2:20 pm to 3:30 pm

In the equity segment, the pre-open session runs from 2:05 pm to 2:20 pm. For stocks in the closing auction session (CAS), continuous trading ends at 3:15 pm and closing auction order entry runs from 3:20 pm to 3:30 pm. BSE's notice 20261019-9 dated 19 Oct 2026 gives the same main window for its equity segment: pre-open from 2:05 pm and continuous trading from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm (BSE notice).

One point many first-time participants miss: NSE states that all trades executed in the Muhurat session result in settlement obligations. It is a real trading session, not a symbolic one, so the usual margin, settlement and risk rules apply.

Commodity derivatives on NSE: evening session stays open

The commodity segment follows a different pattern. NSE's commodity derivatives holiday circular NSE/COM/71784 dated 15 Dec 2025 lists a morning session (9 am to 5 pm) and an evening session (5 pm to 11:30 pm or 11:55 pm) (NSE circular).

What the holidays mean for F&O expiry

NSE's equity derivatives contracts expire on Tuesdays: Nifty 50 weekly contracts every Tuesday, and monthly contracts on the last Tuesday of the month (circular NSE/FAOP/68747 dated 25 Jun 2025). NSE's contract specifications page says that if the Tuesday is a trading holiday, the expiry day becomes the previous trading day (NSE contract specifications).

Both November holidays fall on a Tuesday. Applying that rule:

  • Nifty 50 weekly contracts due on Tuesday, 10 Nov would expire on Monday, 9 Nov.

  • November monthly contracts, due on the last Tuesday (24 Nov), would expire on Monday, 23 Nov.

Always confirm the exact expiry date in your broker's contract list or on NSE before you trade, because the exchange's contract master is the final word.

Nishi's takeaway

Holidays and shifted expiries are small details that can catch traders off guard. Positions held into a long break carry overnight risk for longer, and an expiry that moves a day earlier can change how you plan an options position. Mark the dates in your calendar and size risk with them in mind.
